True Online Poker Stories
♠
Matt
Damon's character from Rounders
was right when he said (and I'm
paraphrasing here), "Surprisingly,
most poker players don't remember
the biggest hands they've won.
However, they can vividly remember
those that put a bad beat on them."
It seems like the most extreme
situations can happen at the online
poker table with the combination of
inexperienced players playing more
hands than they should and seeing at
least twice as many hands as you
would at a casino cardroom. Sure,
bad beats happen all the time at
brick-and-mortar cardrooms but they
aren't given as much attention for a
few reasons:
Most
poker stories inherently occur
online these days. Most players
enjoy poker from the comfort of
their home at whatever hour they
prefer. Thus, more hands take place
online than in cardrooms. Many
casino players are also afraid of
ridicule when they go all-in on an
inside straight draw with their 7-3
offsuit. Online players realize they
are just a nameless icon on the
screen, which can be both a positive
and a negative at times. Hands, of
course, take place more quickly
online. If you're seeing 65 hands
per hour online as opposed to 25 or
30 at a cardroom, you'll see twice
as many bad beats. If you're playing
multiple tables, it's that much more
likely. On the bright side, online
poker gives you twice as much action
for the same amount of time
investment.
The fact
is that cards have no memory -
digital or otherwise. At times you
might feel like online poker is
rigged to favor the worst hand when
the money goes in and that really is
a silly argument. I can think of no
better way for online poker sites to
flush their billions of dollars down
the toilet. Can you imagine the
scoop if word got out that an online
poker was cheating its customers?
Truth be told, the online poker site
would rather everyone remain even so
they have money to sit at the tables
with.
Anyway,
the following are true online poker
stories - usually complete with
graphical hand histories. While many
are simply unlikely yet entertaining
hands, some stories are interesting
because they could only take place
online (i.e. because of a misclick
of the mouse). If you have a story
that you'd like the world (or at
least our visitors) to know, feel
free to send
it in for publishing.
