Former Talent Agent Wins $12M and
Becomes Poker’s World Champion
August 17, 2006 (written by Beat The Fish)
Before the first cards were
even dealt at the final table, Jamie Gold already held a
monster chip lead. Thanks to a fortunate run of cards
and second-best hands giving away their chips, Gold
ended Thursday night poker’s new World Champion. Oh,
right, and $12,000,000 richer.
Jamie Gold, 36, lives in Malibu, California and is a
former Hollywood talent agent. He held the chip lead
since Day 4 and dominated the 2006 World Series of Poker
Main Event since. He personally knocked out 7 of the 8
other final table contenders including
Full Tilt Poker’s Allen Cunningham, a tournament
professional and the only pro who made it to the final
9. It was a dominating final table performance by Gold –
one that hasn’t been matched in this era of massive WSOP
fields.
Gold, who got his buy-in paid for by
Bodog on a hunch, eliminated Paul Wasicka to become
poker’s newest champion and take his place in poker
immortality. Gold eliminated Wasicka when he flopped a
pair of Queens and coerced his opponent to call his
all-in bet with pocket 10s.
The total number of entrants for the event dwarfed any
previous live poker tournament in history totaling 8,773
players. The prize pool was so large that everyone
finishing 12th or better was guaranteed at least $1.2
million.
The WSOP Main Event full final table results with prize
money:
