William Hill US opened the first-ever long-term sportsbook within the Capital One Arena Box Office, marking a significant moment for US pro sports. Namely, Capital One is the first US professional sports arena to have a permanent sportsbook within its walls.
The opening came a year and a half after the venue and William Hill US struck a deal.
The CEO of Monumental Sports and owner of multiple DC professional sports teams, including the Wizards, Capitals, and Mystics, Ted Leonsis, said:
“It’s a wonderful day for sports fans. This is the first step in the reinvention of the role arenas play in the community.”
What Can Visitors Expect?
The William Hill Capital One betting place will feature 17 betting windows and 12 self-serving betting kiosks. The facility spans over 18,000 square feet and two stories, offering more than enough room for visitors.
The operator said guests would have an incredibly unique experience thanks to the three elite suppliers in the entertainment and hospitality industries. That includes a restaurant run by Michelin-star chef Nicholas Stefanelli.
Ted Leonsis added:
“I believe this is going to be a huge success because it is very fan-friendly. Having an experience in the building more than just when the game is here.”
The sportsbook is decorated with more than 100 TV screens. On top of that, four television screens are positioned on all four sides of the jumbotron. The jumbotron hangs from the center ceiling of the venue, representing a replica of the Capital One Arena ice court. Furthermore, the entire facility is wrapped with a custom-made 1,500 square foot LED screen. This will enable the best viewing experience for all visitors.
The facility also comes with a broadcast studio for live television and radio show hosting. The whole experience wouldn’t be possible without two VIP sections and a private entertainment and dining space.
The design of the sportsbook pays homage to the history of sports, including local professional teams. Fans can marvel at the sports memorabilia throughout the whole space.
Crucial Historic Moment
After the Supreme Court’s 2019 decision to negate the Bradley Act’s strict approach to gambling, restrictions on gambling and sports betting nationwide have been lenient. Thanks to such an outcome, this permanent venue is the first legal sportsbook in the District.
Interestingly, the Capital One Arena Box Office opened a similar temporary facility in August 2020. It proved to be one of the most successful businesses in DC in the fall amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
The CEO of Caesars Entertainment, Tom Reeg, said this is a new paradigm after becoming a financial and operating partner involved in the sportsbook. The company provided digital platforms and innovative solutions in the months before the opening.
