WSOP SCHEDULE FOR 2013

The 2013 World Series of Poker Schedule

2013 WSOP Schedule

♠ Bookmark This Page ♠

As the poker world gears up for the 2013 WSOP schedule it seems like just yesterday the 2012 WSOP was finishing up. I think that's partly in thanks to how the WSOP is setup, though. It kind of works like this:

  • Beginning of the year -- Talk about the previous Series and the upcoming schedule.
  • WSOP Series -- Play (or watch) the series from May to July.
  • Delay -- Talk about the final table, sponsorships, etc. from July to November.
  • November -- Play (or watch) the Main Event final table.

...then rinse and repeat. It's a never ending cycle but we wouldn't have it any other way.

So here we are again, it's the new year and the 2013 WSOP schedule is listed in full below with my thoughts. Also, here's a recap some of the highlights from the 2012 World Series of Poker.

What Happened Last Year?
The 43rd annual WSOP was different than the previous year in a few ways. First off, there were 61 bracelet events, 2 more than the 2011 WSOP. And because of the presidential election, the final table of the Main Event was delayed until October, as opposed to November like the last 4 years.

There were a few additions to the schedule, too. Four variations were added to the mix and will return to the 2013 WSOP schedule:

  • Re-Entry - Players eliminated on day 1 could re-enter the next day.
  • Mixed Max - Play starts out at 9-max, then goes to 6-max, then heads-up for the remainder of the tournament.
  • 4-Max - Four players per table (max).
  • Ante Only - The small and big blind were removed. Only antes were posted preflop.

In addition to these variations, The Big One for One Drop, a charity tournament, was added. I cover this $1 million (buy-in) tournament below.

Notable Winners from 2012
Several poker pros added bracelets to their resumes during the 2012 WSOP. The most notable players include:

  • Andy Bloch - Event #7 Seven Card Stud - $126,363
  • Brian Hastings - Event #12 Heads Up NLHE - $371,498
  • Phil Hellmuth - Event #18 Seven Card Razz - $182,793
  • Ylon Schwartz - Event #27 HORSE - $267,081
  • Michael Mizrachi - Event #45 Poker Players Championship - $1,451,527
  • Vanessa Selbst - Event #52 10-Game Mix - $244,259
  • Antonio Esfandiari - Event #55 The Big One for One Drop (NLHE) - $18,346,673

A number of pros (painfully) finished in second, too, including:

  • Barry Greenstein - Event #7 Seven Card Stud
  • Gavin Griffin - Event #8 Omaha Hi/Lo
  • Todd Brunson - Event #15 Seven Card Stud Hi/Lo
  • Phil Ivey - Event #17 Pot Limit Holdem
  • Scotty Nguyen - Event #24 Omaha Hi/Lo
  • Dennis Phillips - Event #29 Seniors NLHE
  • Brandon Cantu - Event #30 2-7 Draw Lowball
  • Joe Cada - Event #31 NLHE

Last year we witnessed Phil Hellmuth winning his 13th bracelet, furthering his lead in total bracelets won, and adding more final tables (49 total) and cashes (95 total) to his career totals. He also became the first player to win both the WSOPE (World Series of Poker Europe) and WSOP Main Events.

I also liked seeing previous relatively unknown Main Event players come back and dominate. Ylon Schwartz won his first bracelet and Dennis Phillips finished second in the Seniors Event. Both were at the 2008 Main Event final table. Joe Cada was also a runner up for a bracelet in 2012, which would've been his second after winning the 2009 WSOP Main Event. It's great to see that these guys aren't one-hit wonders, but players that truly excel at the game of poker.

2012 World Series of Poker Main Event
The 2012 World Series of Poker Main Event attracted 6,598 players, the 5th largest turnout in history. The Main Event prize pool was over $62 million and paid the top 666 players. The payout structure must've been different compared to previous years, though, because the minimum payout for making the final table was $754,798, whereas the minimum for making the final table in previous years with fewer players was $1 million (plus). Of course, that's still not a bad payday.

Interestingly, the Main Event final table did not have any big name pros, relatively speaking. It was the longest final table in history, however, having played 399 hands. This broke the previous record of 364 hands. It took well over 13 hours just to go from 3-handed play to the end.

The player who won the 2012 WSOP Main Event was Greg Merson, an online pro. He picked up $8,531,853 for his efforts. This was a big win, but what's more amazing is that he also took down Event #57. So Greg won 2 bracelets and nearly $10 million in earnings during the 2012 WSOP.

Interesting Fact: Only 2 previous WSOP Main Event champions cashed in the 2012 Main Event. Johnny Chan finished in 353rd and Huck Seed finished in 527th.

2012 WSOP #55 - The Big One for One Drop
Stealing some of the thunder from the WSOP Main Event was the tournament titled, The Big One for One Drop, a charity tournament with a $1 million buy-in. Only 48 seats were available and all were filled. The rake was waived for this tournament and donated, in addition to 11.1% of each buy-in. Guy Laliberte, poker pro and founder of One Drop, donated his winnings to the cause as well -- nearly $2 million dollars! In total, this event contributed $7.28 million to the cause.

The winner of the event was Antonio Esfandiari. He won $18,346,673 for first place, which made it the highest first place prize in WSOP history. The previous record was Jamie Gold's 2006 Main Event win of $12 million.

Unfortunately, The Big One for One Drop will not return in its $1 million form to the 2013 WSOP schedule, although 2 events will have their fees given to One Drop. The $111,111 event this year is likely what Harrah's views as a replacement but it is odd that they aren't simply returning the eye-popping numbers of what was such a popular success.

2013 WSOP Schedule Thoughts

The complete 2013 WSOP Schedule has been released and is listed in full below. After several years of predictable ho-hum event lists the past two years Harrah's and eight-time tournament director Jack Effel have actually managed to excite me again. A handful of unique events coupled with some interesting formats borrowed from the online world makes the WSOP feel fresh again for regular followers. While I may not personally be a fan of re-entries or shorthanded tables the simple fact that they are trying to innovate and experiment again after several years of stagnation is commendable.

The 2013 WSOP schedule matches last year's staggering number of 62 events, largely dominated by the incredibly popular sub-$3,000 no-limit hold'em tournaments. As explained above players now have several table structure choices including shorthanded tables, re-entry, ante-only, and mixed max. Highlights on the schedule include the $111,111 One Drop event that is replacing the $1 million event from last year, the returning $50,000 Players Championship, the $25,000 six-handed event, and the $1,500 "Millionaire Maker". While the "Millionaire Maker" name reeks of marketing hype the idea is interesting in that the prize structure is adjusted to give the winner at least $1 million. Despite numerous other events that earn the winners more than $1 million the low $1,500 is what makes Event 6 especially noteworthy.

With such an immense schedule beginning on May 29 and ending on July 15 (save the Main Event final table that takes place in November) Harrah's once again seems to cater well to every type of player, whether it be long-weekend casual players or high-buy-in ultra-events designed to attract the professionals most of us care to watch. The only complaints seem to come from a vocal minority of non-hold'em fans, although almost a third of the schedule features games other than hold'em. Omaha has especially gained traction over the past several years.

The WSOP is and always will be the premier poker tournament series in the world. However, with less disposable income to go around Harrah's needs to keep giving players interesting reasons to trek out and pay for the annual trip to the Mecca of the poker universe. With the 2013 WSOP schedule and the addition of some new tweaks it looks like that has been accomplished.

Additional Information
Beginning in march players can pre-register for any WSOP event. For online satellite information see our recommendations after the event list.

Similar to last year the Rio will host daily multi-table tournaments with small buy-ins of both to catch recent bustouts and offer a cheap way for small-bankroll players to enjoy the atmosphere. These aren't officially part of the 2013 WSOP schedule but can still draw several hundred players. Of course, there will also be numerous cash tables set up for side action, which typically are some of the juiciest games of the year in Vegas.

Top Choices for Qualifying Online

All sites listed are available to US players.

Bovada Poker Open to US Players

Bovada has been especially impressive since poker's Black Friday, continuing to serve US players while maintaining some of the easiest deposits online, the quickest payouts in the market, and extremely soft cash games. They will have plenty of satellites for the 2013 WSOP schedule and, with the VIP treatment and private events they always hold for their players, there isn't a better site to qualify from in the US. Our new players receive a 100% poker bonus in addition to a free 50% instant cash sports bet bonus.

BetOnline is another strong choice, not because they feature an enormous amount of 2013 WSOP schedule satellites but because, like our top choice, they're one of the few strong US poker rooms left with near-100% credit card success rates and extremely profitable cash games. While the traffic is fairly good it is mainly focused on cash games, which can be a blessing for those preferring to battle a smaller field with a lower time investment for satellites. Our new players receive free real money tournament credits as well as an instant sports bonus.

PokerStars has always been the behemoth when it comes to the WSOP and, despite disallowing US players 2 years ago, has continuously sent the most players to the Series for almost a decade. They are the largest poker room in the world by far and innumerable ways to qualify for the 2013 WSOP schedule from special freerolls to step tournaments to micro buy-ins. While the promotions may not match our next choice for non us players if you are simply interested in the WSOP it's tough to choose anywhere but poker stars. Our new players receive a 100% bonus, valid up to $600.

888 Poker is our next choice for non-US players to qualify for a 2013 WSOP schedule event not so much for its size but for the rewards players receive and their quietly-strong satellites. Even with fewer satellites than poker stars the quality of players is exponentially worse thanks to this poker room being chock-full of its inexperienced casino players from the parent brand. Even though micro-sub-satellites are available some of my favorites are those that award 20% of the entrants a main satellite seat, which is about twice the standard payout amount. Our new players receive $8 in real money without a deposit in addition to a 100% bonus.
